I’m 6 weeks pregnant in big law and in my second year at 30. Have already been feeling that big law is not for me for a while. Now that I’m pregnant, I want to take advantage of leave and don’t feel like I have the motivation to job hunt. I’m already nervous about coming back after leave and want to make a change. If you were in a similar boat, what was your timeline for transitioning from big law/did you end up finding a good WLB role? Or did you stick it out/reduce hours?

Take the big law leave. You can talk to recruiters and even take interviews while on leave. Quit shortly after you return or anytime later.

Reduced schedule/counsel at BigLaw is the promised land IMO

Happy to hear this. Just went on reduced schedule and hoping it’s a good thing.

Not on point because I stayed, but wanted to say that I was in your shoes (first kid at the end of YR 1 of big law at 29) and it’s worth sticking it out for the maternity leave and experience. I think it will be easier to find a job with the extra months. 5I came back full time and then reduced hours after my second (as a fourth year). (I had a third, made partner, and then went back to full time three years after partnership.))

If you don’t want to stay you can come back for a few weeks and quit. You can job hunt while on leave.

I would stick around. If you are already ok with leaving you can let off on billing 2300 a year and instead do what you’re comfortable with. You’d be surprised at how long you can hang on 1700 a year

I would have a look at new places now depending on your firm policies. At my place they can recoup the enhanced maternity pay if you leave within a year after returning. If you lateral now they might be willing to agree to pay maternity - this happened with a recent lateral in my team.

Ah it might be different in your country. In mine most firms pay more than the statutory minimum which they then seek to recoup if you don’t return

When did you know your firm wasn't right for you? I'm not sure if it's just the stress of being a new attorney with a family or if my job isn't the right fit. I work in civil litigation and am consistently below my billables. I can't stay late because my kids need me and I can't work on the weekends because I have to maintain my house and take care of my kids. I'm being constantly told to work harder, stay later, etc but it's not practical. Or am I not approaching this with the right mindset?
