I’m 7 weeks pregnant with my first and suffering severe nausea all day. I feel so bad for not billing and wondering what my options are if the nausea continues as I’ve heard it does through the rest of the first trimester. Is it a bad idea to take a 2-3 week leave if it persists through next week even though I’ll be taking maternity leave in January? I feel guilty dragging my feet with work but also guilty taking time off and leaving more work for my colleagues.

Get zofran from your doctor

like

Talk to your doctor about anti-nausea meds. I found consistently eating something (applesauce, crackers, Cheerios, popcorn, etc) helped a ton.

Zofran and persistence. Sour stuff helps too.

Waiting on zofran but also have been loving sour things!

Talk to your doctor - even if you don’t want to take nausea meds there are some vitamins/supplements that can help. Make sure you’re eating enough too - I had very little morning sickness and I think it had a lot to do with keeping something in my stomach all the time. I had little baggies of crackers and pretzels that I took everywhere with me and would be munching on all day. They also make sour hard candies called Preggie Pops you can order on Amazon that help. It usually does get better though!

I am just under ten weeks now and was feeling exactly how you were three weeks ago. Today, things started to feel a little bit better. It’s okay if your hours dip for a few weeks. See if any of the other advice shared works for you, and if not, take care of yourself as best as you can and know that it is temporary and will pass. 💛

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act protections

like

See: https://www.eeoc.gov/pregnancy-discrimination

("Pregnancy discrimination and pregnancy-related disability discrimination . . . is against the law. . . . The EEOC enforces three federal laws that protect job applicants and employees who are pregnant.")

Also, I just did a Google search to fact-check my memory on this topic (I'm a law student and I happen to have taken a semester of Disability Law in Fall 2024); all the following excerpts popped up within the "AI Overview" section at the top of my search results.

...then...basically...I realized that "copy/pasting" the AI's output to here gets the whole gist of what I might've said across well enough; so, as a starting point for ya...enjoy 🤓...

(Also, sidenote: as regards the Americans with Disabilities Act, "Title I" is the relevant title here. ...presuming you work somewhere that has 15+ employees...)

**********

Pregnancy-related conditions can be disabilities:

Conditions like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or severe morning sickness that arise during pregnancy may qualify as disabilities under the [Americans with Disabilities Act].

-----

Reasonable accommodation required:

If a pregnant worker has a pregnancy-related condition that qualifies as a disability, the employer may be required to provide reasonable accommodations, such as allowing remote work, modifying the work schedule, or reassigning the worker to light duty.

-----

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA):

This Act, which took effect on June 27, 2023, expands protections for pregnant workers by requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnancy-related conditions, even if those conditions don't qualify as disabilities under the [Americans with Disabilities Act].

-----

Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA):

This law prohibits employment discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, and requires employers to treat pregnant workers the same as other employees with similar limitations.

I used unisom and B6, which is not as aggressive as the anti nausea meds. I had bad morning sickness but got through it with this combo. At the time, I always thought the prescribed meds were for those woman with that morning sickness condition and never even asked for anything stronger.

like

I was at a much chiller firm at the time but I would probably ask for something stronger in my current environment! I definitely felt horrible with both kids until 12 weeks. I don’t know how women in big law handle the morning sickness!

I also felt better if I had something in my stomach at all times with both pregnancies. Gained lots of weight each time. Lost it each time. Kids are now 20 and 18 years old and are fine. Ask your doc. Hopefully medical science has advanced more now and you can get something to help you more than just a bunch of saltines.

I’m definitely anticipating gaining a lot of weight given my clothes stopped fitting this week 🙄 And trying hard not to feel like a lazy POS. The saltines worked during week 6 but now I think I may need medication. It seems like I have a permanent hangover with COVID and the stomach flu, and no food seems to help.

Not a helpful comment but I’m also 7 weeks! ☺️☺️. I’m eating constantly to stave off the nausea
