Only subtly or culturally. I feel like the men I've worked with have always been very helpful and friendly, but there is a persistent feeling that I am on the outside of the club because there aren't any other women on our current team. Idk if this is something that is avoidable, and it doesn't bother me that much because I feel generally respected.
Of course! I think we've come a long way in STEM culture for women, obviously we're not perfect but I do feel like things are much better today than they might have been 20 years ago.
I just learned today that Jacobs Engineering offered me a position much less than what they offered to my co-worker (male) for a similar project/program manager positions but in different teams. I have more years of experience (9 years for me vs 6 years for him) and I have more managerial experience. So yeah, there is that!
As an ME with almost 15 years in Oil & Gas, I’ve seen a lot of women engineers come and go. What I’ve noticed is that most women don’t seem to fit in initially.
Most young engineers (male or female) are asked to work in the field for their first few years before moving to an office role. That environment is a little rough at times, dirty, hot, long hours.
So if I a women excels in that environment and is a good engineer she seems to get promoted ahead of her male peers after that. I suspect that is mainly due to companies wanting diversity and the current lack of it in engineer heavy companies.
Hope this helps.
