Recruiters are unlikely to help you. Do whatever you need to do to switch and don’t settle, trust me - I’m 7th year, have been trying to switch since I was junior and it’s been impossible. If I could do it over again, I’d do an LLM or take time off until I found the right position

What group are you in, what group did you want to be in, and how junior are you?
Best thing to do is leave the industry if you can

A6, I have no doubt that’s true at some firms. Everyone knows who those firms are. If the market punished firms that do repugnant things they would change their behavior. Case in point. Less than a year ago there was a backlash against firms that cut deals with Trump. Now I routinely see those firms discussed in this very forum without any reference to those deals. Another case in point - in 2020 some prominent firms preserved partner cash flow during the pandemic by throwing associates and staff overboard without life jackets. Those firms are paying zero price now for that repugnant decision. And the firms that do train and develop people and don’t throw them overboard in tough times get no consideration now for those realities. 🤷🏻♂️
Just curious, for those who are saying "don't use a recruiter" - have you ever actually worked with a recruiter? As someone who lateraled early in my career by using one, I can honestly say I would have had no idea where to start, how to best advocate for myself, or which firms had solid reputations beyond what was on paper without one. You're not paying the recruiter anything, so there's no harm seeing if they can find you a better landing place that suits your goals.
I’m sure that is often the case, but they can at least on some occasions be helpful in this scenario. I used a recruiter to switch from corporate to private wealth/T&E after only a year of practice. She was very helpful in making the switch.

I would not use a recruiter. What group are you in and which are you trying to move to? If related transactional areas will be tough but possible.
