I’m an associate in a busy bankruptcy group (just started after a clerkship) and I’ve started to have to to turn down work because I’m too busy (I don’t tell partners no, but say something along the lines of “I don’t think I’d be able to start on that for a day or two”). How much is too much for saying no to work? This week I’ve been billing like 10hrs a day and worked late 3 nights

Q4 can be a tough time to start, so understand that things may cool off a bit after everyone closes their year end rush jobs. As far as communicating availability, I think you’re right to put the ball in their court. Something like “I am happy to help. I am currently working on [insert doc/filing/etc.] for [insert partner], but I expect go free up again on [insert time you can start]. Please let me know if this works for your anticipated timeline, and thank you for thinking of me.”

I’ve spoken with the other associates and I’m staffed on more than average matters/higher end of matters… all these deals better not become active at once

Are there any mid levels or seniors that you have made connections with yet and trust? It could be good to ask them what “capacity” is in your group. Approach it from the angle of “hey, I’m starting to feel like I’m getting pulled in a couple of directions and, since I’m new, want to make sure I’m navigating this appropriately. This is how much I have been billing, have had X, Y, Z partner reach out to me, and this is how I have handled it so far. Do you have any guidance or thoughts on how to make sure I’m staying busy and contributing to the group, but also ensuring I’m not too overwhelmed to deliver quality work product on time?”

like

That’s a really good idea

Much better to say no than to drop the ball. also, if you’re brushing off work from midlevels to do work for partners, don’t do that.

Why not?

I firmly believe leadership makes the difference.

Not only, it highlins each one's value, but especially spreads this value among others.
I'm speaking about life, in a broad sense, which also include work life, but it is not limited to that.

What’s your work-life balance like? I feel like I’m constantly working after hours, always balancing multiple projects, hardly ever going through a phase where there isn’t a ton of critical initiatives going on. It definitely wasn’t like this when I was a more junior PMM, but as a Senior PMM, my work-life balance has severely decreased. Is this just the nature of Product Marketing? Or can I actually find a senior PMM role that allows a bit more room to breathe?

I mean it's possible that I may receive a merit, but I feel like I won't considering my manager never brought it up & the dept update made it sound like those receiving it should know by now.

Got diagnosed after college & after having been fired from my first job. Passed the CPA exams on Adderall. Went off of it again. I do everything well at my job except for attention to detail within my excel files & emails. Will taking ADHD medication really fix this? Just want to make sure people know this and don’t apply jobs in this shady company- it is called UniQ Biotech, in Delta, BC, Canada
