Do any single M&A associates have dogs? I am a third year at a generally work from home flexible firm and considering getting a dog for mental and physical health reasons. Has having a dog been an issue with work? And any tips for bringing a dog home while working insane hours with occasional trips to the office?

You’ll need a dog walker. Set one up even though you have time for walks now. They’re expensive, but you don’t want to be in a position where your dog is stuck inside all day. Doggy daycare is also a thing, but make sure you vet the place.

You can definitely do this with crazy hours. You just need to set up some infrastructure to make sure your dog is living a decent life.

I think daycare takes time. Mine hated it at first but I started dropping her off on days where her friend from our apartment complex would be there and now she drags me there every morning.

Rover is a thing too! My dog has loved every Rover sitter she’s had. Also friends and neighbors.

Maybe try and foster first to see how it goes, but consider rescuing a retired racing greyhound. They are generally very low maintenance compared to most dogs and should be already trained. They are used to being in a crate 8 hours a day (not saying you should do this, but they are accustomed to it) and sleep a lot. Most are okay with a few short walks a day.

If you cannot dedicate at least 15 minute breaks throughout the day for the dog, and then at least a couple of hours in the evening, please do not get a dog. They are a lot of work, they require attention, etc. If you do not have a strong support group that can help watch the dog, then do not get one.

If you get a puppy, then they literally require attention almost all day while they are young.

Please be honest with yourself before getting a dog; the dog will suffer if you cannot dedicate enough time and attention.

likesmarthelpful

Agreed with above, OP if you want a puppy specifically, get a puppy while you're still a junior/third year, before you have more responsibility as a midlevel

Rescue an older dog. I’ve had 3 adult rescues and if you get the right fit they will slide in to your life quite nicely. Puppies are hell 0/10 recommend. I have a 10 month old baby - puppy was more stressful 🤣.

like

I’m RR not M&A but I got a puppy last year. I’d recommend getting a dog that’s over 1 but still young from a rescue that only fosters (no pound issues). Puppies are hell.

I have a dog walker come every day I WFH and use a daycare when I’m in office, but girlie is a diva so no choice. Feel free to DM. highly recommend against an untrained puppy or a shelter dog that hasn’t been in foster care.

like

Yeah I forgot to mention that my puppy is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. And she really is. But I got her in 2021 when things were slow. If I had to run around trying to house train her now I’d drive myself crazy. Also daycares don’t take young puppies who haven’t had a rabies vaccine (6 mo) or haven’t been spayed/neutered (some research suggests you shouldn’t do this early for mental and physical development so we did it at 9 mo).

I had a dog as a single person in big law. It takes a village. I had a team of dog walkers and sitters who could step in if a last minute work trip popped up.

like

I got a puppy at the end of my 2L summer. She was used to me leaving for class by the time 5 days a week in office rolled around.

She did a dogwalker 2x a week and daycare _with pickup and drop-off_ (this was clutch bc early morning calls and evening emergencies meant she was fine). I also had a law student come most days in the afternoon or evening to feed and hang out with her, which was a huge win-win.

I walked with my dog for about half an hour every morning, and we did a ten or fifteen minute late night walk too.

My dog was happy and healthy, but she passed away a few years later due to an accident. I got a new mini doodle puppy in 2018, and she had a litter box, a walker, an old lady from my building to hang with her. She is sweet and well adjusted. She weaned off the litter box by 5 mos.

It's doable. The unconditional love and walking is really good for my mental health.

Go for it, but set up your village to help. And set yourself up for success by getting a breed that's right for you. Good luck.

I’m single and cannot imagine life without my 5-year-old dog. As others have said, it takes a village. Be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on dog walkers or doggy daycare each year, and boarding anytime you need to travel. And more on vet bills and grooming depending on the type of dog you get. It’s worth it to me, but this could easily be in the $5,000-$10,000 per year range.

I got mine as a puppy. For the first 6 months or so, he stayed in a playpen with pee pads and a tarp under (for any pee accidents), and I had someone stop by every 2 hours or so to let him out and give him attention. Once he was able to hold his pee longer, he stayed in his crate and I still had a dog walker come once or twice a day until he was about a year old. After a year, he started doing daycare a couple times a week, and a dog walker would stop by the other days.

If you’re working from home and get a puppy, maybe you can have the puppy in a crate or playpen near you in your office. If you keep the puppy in a crate in another room, it would likely bark. And roaming free, there would be lots of accidents.

After a year, I let my dog start sleeping in my bed at night. He had been crated at night in my room before then, but I felt awful about the amount of time he was in a crate. If your dog will need to be crated more than 10 hours a day, I wouldn’t recommend getting a dog.

Also, after about 3 years, I started letting my dog roam free a lot more while I’m gone. So now, I still have a dog walker come on my in-office days, and I let him roam free if someone will be coming within 5 hours or so. If closer to 8 hours, I crate him to avoid accidents.

like

I agree with a lot of this but my dog prefers being crated to roaming, so that just depends on the dog.

Im in M&A and I couldn’t have done it while she was a puppy without my SO. A puppy is really difficult to take care of while WFH - you need to stop like every 20 minutes for one thing or another and keep them entertained. It gets a lot easier once they’re vaccinated and they can go to daycare. Ours goes to daycare 3x a week - it’s still a little hard because I have to get up early to walk her every day or take her to daycare and M&A often expects late nights but it also forces you to set boundaries.

Get 2 cats. Then train them to be Big City Lady Cat Secretaries. Worked for me. They sleep on my desk all day. At night, I hear them running wildly around the apartment — presumably working hard on after-hours filings. 🐈💄🏙

Try being a temporary foster for a shelter first.

I adopted an adult dog and work from home most of the time. He’s absolutely amazing and adopting an adult dog is the way to go in my opinion. Very easy to train. Additionally, I have help from my sister and a dedicated dog walker who loves him very much so he is not alone the majority of the time

Offer 2 is with a health system doing strategy/ops. It pays more than offer 1 and probably has more stability. Both pay more than my current salary overall so I’m a winner with whatever I take. My struggle is how do I decide! Help!
