Unfortunately, this experience is common—but that doesn’t mean it should be accepted. If the culture won’t evolve with you, it’s worth asking whether your energy is better spent elsewhere. Respect shouldn’t require exhaustion.
I’m a female svp in a different industry than you and … same.
My executive coach gave me some advice: They do it because you let them. I was in your shoes not long ago and realized I was putting all this pressure on myself and trying to prove why I was in the boys club. I stopped giving a F and became the best I could be. Suddenly I didn’t feel the pressure and could live my life.
For people talking over you, calmly ask them if you can finish your question/thought/idea. Then ask them a direct question on how what you said aligns with what they are thinking. Example: “Geoff, is what I outlined what you were thinking too?” Or “Paul, do you have additional insight to add?” It takes a while but they end up paying attention to you more.
If I was making $260k I’d be staying put - in this economy especially.
HOWEVER:
While I’m not yet at the top, even in my leadership roles I would assert that it is definitely the female tax.
Subordinate men often challenge me and male bosses doubt me. It creates a parallel in which I have to prove my expertise and earn respect both up and down the ladder. It’s an added challenge that men simply don’t face when they obtain higher level positions - they are often enabled to fail upwards and given the benefit of the doubt in all scenarios.
The question is if you really believe the culture will be different elsewhere should you hop companies.
I’m a director and my leadership team recently changed. When my VP and peers were women I had a voice now that I’m apart of a predominantly male team, they are the only ones heard. I will get pushback and 5 minutes later my peer will repeat what I said and they are recognized/acknowledged/encouraged. It’s tiring.
In this economy? Buckle down and make yourself indispensable.
This kinda of experience is all over TikTok. People share it constantly. This is the world we live in! Congrats for doing the hard work and staying with it
