I used to be a for-profit plaintiff’s lawyer. My two cents is, if you want to help people, you need to leave the for-profit world. If you want to stay in the for-profit world, prioritize finding the best compensation.
The profit motive corrupts plaintiff-side practice. Even if you’re representing people against companies, the way you represent them is worse due to the profit motive. I found myself in situations in which I was using and deceiving people. You can avoid that to some extent by working for good people, but the for-profit plaintiff-side world is full of seedy people who don’t give a fuck about their clients. And even if you do find an ethical and decent firm, you’ll find yourself in situations in which you are wasting your time pursuing less important or less meritorious cases because they were more profitable than the ones that mattered.
If you want to make money, just make money. If you want to help people, help people. Don’t try to have your cake and eat it too.
I’ve worked at multiple firms like what you’re describing. The work isn’t as beneficial or altruistic as you’re making it sound, even at the self-branded civil rights ones, when you look at it up close.
I think it’s common to find lawyers at firms like that who like talking about their values. But that’s often just vanity and not really honest. Especially the little firms. Those creeps generally think about nothing but chasing dollars to keep the lights on. They don’t have time to think about anything else. They put on a little show talking about standing up for the little guy, or civil rights, or whatever they have to to build their brand and convince people to pay them. What’s weird is you’re not even really disagreeing - you’re saying most personal injury lawyers are scumbags. You just think you’re one of the unique altruistic ones, eyeroll
No. You can make a lot more from a PI firm than ID.
