I’ve done PI work my entire career for over 10 years. I’ve worked in state and federal courts and I’ve traveled around the country doing MDL work and bellwether trials. I’ve had a lot of success making the idiots I’ve worked for wealthy, but I’m still waiting for a moment where I enjoy what I’m doing. I feel stuck working in dysfunctional plaintiff firms/cultures. I hate this profession/career more and more each year. Has anybody been successful breaking off on their own in recent years? Advice?

What’s dysfunctional about plaintiffs firms? Sounds like you have been in a couple.

Have you been able to get on PSCs? If you do like the work you do, try and get under the wing of an attorney you admire at a different firm and see if they’d bring you in on just high dollar cases (or to their firm). I’ve seen this work out for a few people. They do small amounts of work with their firm but mostly lend themselves as a quasi trial consultant.

I managed to be hired by a really good company so naturally the impostor syndrome in me is now in full gear. Obviously, I must know things to have been hired, but I feel like there's so much I still don't know about product design. I got here through short courses and some books and articles and faking it till I made it. I am thinking to take a proper PD course now that I can afford it, if not to learn something new, then to affirm what I already know.

Thoughts on this plan of mine? Hehe

I've been in practice for about a year at a high stakes plaintiffs litigation firm. I make $85/year, I'm in the office at 8 and leave around 5:30. I work occasionally on Saturdays. When we have something big coming up, I stay extra to get it done in time. I've never missed a deadline.

I had a meeting this week where the partners told me they questioned my commitment because they were working more hours than me.

Am I the problem here and should work more, or is it time to find a new job?
