You can’t stop all of them, but you can push for better scoping by asking calm, specific questions like, “What’s the actual deadline, what’s the priority versus other jobs, and what can drop if we take this on?” so leaders feel you’re trying to protect the work, not refusing it.

Our job is to solve the puzzle, not push back. Pushing back has a negative connotation, and you don’t want to be labeled as hard to work with. You want to be the person who steps in and saves the day. In the process, you can make helpful, positive suggestions on how to avoid future fire drills. Try getting in early on a production. Good Producers know how to plan and schedule jobs out so we don’t find ourselves in this position.
I agree that producing is not for the lighthearted and it is not designed for everyone. This isn’t a linear role. Push back for what conflict. I am of the understanding it is our job to find solutions to problems. With time and experience this become normalized. It’s hard to change a structure that has been in place for decades but find ways to put your own spin on it or move to another career. Yes blunt but it’s true. Plenty of people want to be apart of the chaos that may complain about. Again not the career choice if you are not willing to give up some of the things that “normal” jobs give you but you too have to establish your own boundaries in your setup of the process.
