I’m interested in living overseas while working in the U.S. remotely. Is anyone doing this + successfully navigating significant time zone differences? Is it worth it

I kiiinda did this for 6 months or so, but not in a sneaky way. I was paid by our LDN office, but budgeted and working on NYC clients. It was fine, and I would do it again BUT shifted time zones can really impact your social life, even if it’s just a few hours like nyc to ldn. I missed out on pub drinks with my new local colleagues, or dinners with friends. My free mornings were solitary, which I didn’t mind, but it takes work not to just sleep in and waste them. The worst part was, I missed out on two shoots in the US because they couldn’t carve out the budget to pay for my flights or accom.

I would say this strategy only makes sense if you’re moving somewhere where the cost of living is significantly less than where you live currently, but you get US pay so you’re coming out ahead. Though this unlocks a bunch of weird tax complications too. Or if the place move has a small/not mature ad industry.

I’d honestly advise moving overseas and trying to work in the local industry. You’ll diversify your book and probably learn heaps.

I think I agree about the local thing long term

Hi! I’ve been doing it for spurts as a digital freelance Nomad. I will go to Spain for three months and work US time. It works pretty good in Spain because dinner usually doesn’t start till 1011 at night. And in the summertime it’s so hot and it’s Siesta time from 3 o’clock till 10 o’clock. I can usually make it work. But it can be hard if you’re working US hours in Europe in other places because you’re on a different social schedule and time.

Wow this is awesome. How did you specifically find out about Spain?? I guess it truly depends on your location

Only you can answer if it’s worth it. Seems like the ideal situation would be to connect with someone (parents/friends/family) who have an address in a state with no local taxes. Florida Tennessee, Nevada, etc… make that address your permanent address. Then go wherever you like. This way you’ll get the most money. And then you just have to work on the time zone of your employer

This is quite clever and very true - gotta weigh out if it’s worth the stress and consistent irregular days

It's rough, not sure what time zone you'd be in but if you want a life and good sleep your only solution would be working NY hours and living in South America or PST hours and being in Fiji.

Tell me more about your reasoning??

I did this for three years and loved it for 2 1/2 years. Eventually, I got homesick and moved back, and had to find another job because I wasn't making enough money to live in the United States, whereas my salary was totally fine overseas. It was worth it for the experience, but the money was not great.

Wow that’s a long time!!! What state did you live in?

That can be tricky because most employers will want you living in places where it won't conflict with various tax laws and regulations. And some companies may have concerns about security if you're working remotely overseas. If you're going to try something like that, ask around in your organization and take the temperature. It's possible it won't be a problem, but in some circumstances it can open a can of worms because of tax and employment laws.

Security has definitely been an issue while traveling as a tourist while trying to long into my work computer. certain sites have been shut down so I’m sure this would be a conflict at some point with work

Are indie agencies more flexible?

I think they’d be more strict since they’re smaller and usually need you there but not completely sure

So, here it is. I was having joining on last week October as a senior analyst data science in Tiger Analytics. Today I got an call from HR that due to economic recession we are going to delay your date of joining by 2 months. My notice period was of 3 months. So total duration would be 5 months. Infact even after that too they didn't send me revised offer letter. There is something wrong with this company.

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.

Hey Bowl,
I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?
