I think there’s a moment when you finally see what ACDs are really doing then realize you’ve been doing that the whole time lol.
Sounds like in other places they don’t give you the opportunity to grow into the role. You should be gradually doing that job and gaining experience as time goes on.
The only thing you need to move up to ACD is experience. You’ll get there. Do not limiting yourself and don’t anyone push you down. No one that is above you in the org chart is better than you, they are just more experienced, any skills you lack, you’ll develop.
Do you want to be an ACD? It’s okay to just want to be an individual contributor and want work/life balance
I’m worried I will never be a Senior CW
Hey peeps. I was rocking that same boat. You have what it takes to move up the ladder. Be bold and find people who can trust your work. Do young creative contests on the side and build on the reputation. You got this 💪🏼.
The only thing I found that was different when I became ACD was I got to go to more meetings… fun
Looking back at a time when I felt that way, i wish I knew that my job would essentially be the same. You might not even manage teams at all depending on the agency.
I was an ACD, and I took a pay cut to move back to senior. It was the right choice, for sure.
Middle management is not for everyone.
When I say “go hungry” I’m not saying that literally, more like want for anything.
Good on you for recognizing it. Not a bad thing. Learn, grow, then you will be when the time is right. Far too many creatives want to jump three steps ahead without being ready.
You’ll get there!
I got pushed straight to CD but it took me years to grow into the role.
Honestly ACD and even a lot of CD roles are just extra payment to do the same job. Very few jobs I've seen from friends who are at those levels even creative direct others. Let alone the fact that CDs barely actually creative direct in the first place anymore lol.
There are way more Sr. copy jobs. No worries.
AD is the hardest role. You’re expected to perform IC senior level while also go to meetings/manage other people.
Pro
Tbh you may just grow naturally into the role and the transition will be no different than everything you’ve already been doing for months/years. Thats how it happened for me, anyways.
That’s cool. If you are good and you love the work (and people like working with you) there will likely always be a paycheck for you.
Seems like you've still got time. You probably thought you'd never be ready to be a Senior Copywriter on your first day
