I've had people say that but it never occurred to me to take it seriously or to be offended. People just say things to make conversation, and that's a pretty common example of small talk. I just say "it's no big deal" and get on with the conversation.
I guess it depends to be honest, how you look at it and what the situation is, I was a backup delivery driver on Christmas Eve, I had a brief conversation with a lady she said I am sorry you have to work today, I said well it’s about making people happy, she tipped me 20 dollars, so yes work sucks sometimes, employers do a crap job about not putting their employees needs firsts but it’s the customers that can sometimes recomponsate and having a good attitude that change the direction of the situation
A few times, and I appreciate the thought, but I’m here because you are here. That is what annoys me the most about that comment.
I've both heard that from customers and have said that to employees. I don't think anyone has any ill intentions by it, because it does suck to have to work on the holidays. I would just encourage you to reframe it as kindness and empathy and not false sympathy.
Right? What a weird comment!

Yes! Those comments always throw me off too. I get it’s meant to be nice, but it just makes me feel grumpy instead. Staying cheerful after that is definitely a challenge.
