I don’t think I would say anything until I at least had a couple interviews scheduled (or an actual offer in the table) and felt confident in my move. You also can tell prospective employers you work for a sole practitioner and would like to give 3 weeks notice so you can help wrap up you existing docket and/or help onboard your replacement. Most companies won’t have a problem with this and might even buy you some additional respect. It also will help prevent burning a bridge with your existing employer.
However, if you are thinking of leaving legal all together, you’re existing employer is less likely to feel like they are losing you to competition. Therefore, I might feel comfortable having the conversation earlier
I agree with this route. I would hate for you to bring it up and then it take longer for you to find something and they already have a replacement lined up or your attorney becomes resentful.
Most jobs will be understanding if you let them know you want to give a longer notice before starting to ensure you can assist your current employer time to wrap things up.
It sounds like you’re being really thoughtful about this, which says a lot about you. If you think they’d appreciate the heads-up and it wouldn’t affect your current work dynamic too much, it might be worth mentioning.
I would have a candid conversation with him. Perhaps you are bored with what you are doing and having the convo could open the door to new opportunities within the firm. Just food for thought.
What is it about the job/field that makes you think that this is not for you anymore? Is it the actual field of law you are working on or the law firm? What if it's something you can speak to him about and work on? -- If that is not the issue, and you are 100% percent sure you want to look elsewhere, I think the fact that it is only you 2 working together. You stated you have a good relationship, give him a heads-up, and let him know how you have been feeling and that you are in the process of starting to look elsewhere.
Where is he located and what field of law. I’m seeking employment. Finding your replacement would help.
I have been where you are & it was best to give ample notice, especially if you have a good working relationship. I gave a months notice & it worked out. Good luck.
I agree with assisting to find a replacement if you know someone who you would recommend. It would be helpful if you were there to guide them before you left.
