When you walk in Friday morning to a dumpster fire of a file (that you’ve never worked on before) sitting on your desk, with no note or email to go with it. It’s as if I’m supposed to magically divine what to do with it. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Big law?

Nope. Just a Partner who doesn’t always think things through when delegating

Paralegal here. Organize the file how your firm usually has them. Once it’s organized and everything is In chronological order, look to see if anything’s due today in the pleadings. Then email the associate attorney and remind them you forgot your mind reading device at home and don’t have the faintest clue as to what they want🤣
Hope the last part made you smile a little. I hate it when this happens to me but when I do the above, I sometimes find out that somethings due or there’s a motion that needs to be drafted.

I just realized how much my attorney procrastinates.

😬🫣🙃

I’ve literally drafted and finalize prep for mediation the night before.

That used to happen to me. All I had to go on was a small post it with unintelligible scribble on it. Oh and did I mention it’s due today???

There’s a partner here that does that and I feel so bad for his LA

This is happening to me right now! The woman is on vacation for two weeks and I have no idea what to do with mediation files. And I’m told “just wing it.” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t miss working in the office with paper files at all!!!!!

Since we do everything digitally, I usually have access to everything I need.

If I am unfamiliar with a case I can pull up attorney notes going back years.

Since starting with this firm, I have implemented a system for our team so that anyone can immediately dive into a case and know exactly what is going on.

Idk if you are in a position to do so, but I would look at tool to efficiently collaborate with everyone on your team.

We have a cloud based file management system, but, unfortunately, a lot of our attys are old school and still use paper files. We’re about 50/50 with paper files and paperless. It’s been a slow transition. And, he doesn’t delegate like he should do his LA is in the dark as much as I am 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting since joining this platform. I’m interested in connecting with someone who is open to HR mentoring. I’ve been in HR now for about six years and have never had a mentor. I’ve been relying mostly on SHRM and other people in the company for feedback. Even if it’s for feedback, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Are any other paralegals struggling with billable hour requirements? I have 5 years of experience in corporate transactions, M&A, and real estate work, and have never had billable hour requirements. I'm in a new job now where I do and I'm nowhere near meeting them. I'm getting a lot more admin work than billable work, and it's stressing me out.

So I have my bachelors in criminal justice and I just finished my paralegal certificate course today. My attorney should be making partner this year. With that being said I told her that I would complete my certificate by the summer around the time she would make partner. Should I mention to her Monday that I completed my paralegal certificate in hopes that the raise will be bigger or should I wait until June when she makes partner.thoughts?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.
