I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

This is not a mistake
Dayum, they did you dirty /s
Google doesn't have consistent titling internally, or for job postings (note that job title isnt the same thing as role profile). Just make sure your level number and compensation are in line with your offer.
As long as this doesn’t impact your compensation you are good
“Manager” starts at L6. So yes.
Lmfao from “Strat Op Lead” to “Senior Associate” that’s gonna be hard to explain in a background check. They’re going to assume you’re inflating your title.
That’s consistent. To compare this to something else, in finance, an L5 is usually a Senior Financial Analyst in workday, which is a lower-sounding job title in almost every other company
Very few people use the title externally (LinkedIn, resumes, etc). But yeah it’s a weird system, though I wouldn’t worry about it
Yes and L6 is a Manager level
What role were you at McK?
