I’m struggling to figure out if I don’t enjoy being a PO or if my organization has just not trained me properly. Has anyone else felt this way?

I literally had to pull my car over to respond, I totally get your statement. I going through this exact thing. If I find out something I will be sure let you know. I mean I want to be in this field, honestly I been questioning it and me a lot lately. I do not think that I’ve ever had position where I’ve felt this conflicted! 🙏🏽

I hate to hear it 😔 but I feel the same way! I am so conflicted whether I should look for something else or wait it out to see if it gets better.

I struggle on a regular basis. There are days where I love this role and other where I hate it. For you, is it the role or issues within your organization? What are your issues and challenges?

like

Due to poor or no training, I've had to fake until I make it in the majority of my roles. In 20+ years at 6 different companies in 8 to 10 roles, I've had 3 or 4 instances where I received great guidance and/or training.

What are some of the things you struggle with? Knowing those could help identify where the problem lies

I recently moved to a full PO role and I’m still trying to find ans if I love working with data or doing enhancements..

What don’t you like about it?

like

I really don’t like that I am constantly asking questions…And then feeling like there is no one to answer these questions. I also feel like I can’t go to my PM for guidance as she is overwhelmingly busy. I feel like I’m in a very “fake it till you make it” situation.

It’s likely that you are not set up for success. Each place will have its red tape and/or issues no place is perfect so you have to understand what your peeves are and what types of things your willing to live with. What are some of the things you do not like about your job?

I’m totally in the same position. I’m good at figuring things out on my own and trying different things, but sometimes I face struggles that I didn’t even know I should be thinking about. Like I don’t know what I don’t know. It just makes my impostor syndrome and anxiety go crazy and I feel completely overwhelmed.

like

Definitely the imposter syndrome for me too…I am constantly anxious that I’m just stupid and I don’t belong in this role.

Just my thoughts here…there’s nothing wrong with asking questions. It’s the goal of questions you’re asking and the environment you’re in.

At the end of the day, your role is to help build and deliver something customers love. If your questions are along that line, I’d say keep trying to find answers until you solve the problems in front of you. I honestly used to be so scared of asking questions until my new role. It came from ptsd of previous experience and not wanting to seem like I don’t know what I’m doing but then where I am now, the feedback I get is that my questions are insightful, makes my manager think things through a bit more and also helping me learn faster about the product and the industry.

On the other hand, if your questions are about how you deliver on your role or what you need to do as a PO, then I’d say read up more from outside and really just make sure you’re armed to the teeth with the info you need.

My final point, are you in an environment that fosters your growth? If your questions are around the product, gaining clarity on how things work or knowledge that you can’t find outside your company, I’d say you have every right to question things until you’re fairly certain of what you need to do and how quickly you need to do it.

Alignment and clarity is king in our role as PM or PO and it’ll be hard to determine if you enjoy being a PM or PO if you’ve not experienced what it’s like working with those.

To give context - my first role in the pm track, I had the alignment and clarity with my
Manager but since it was new to me, I took it for granted.

My next one was with a company that wanted a PM, had no PM prior, had big dreams but a terrible culture and limited resources. I had to fight for everything.

My next one was a bit more structured but there was no alignment, clarity came in like 6 months after and because of terrible culture, I kept feeling like shit cos there we practically became a feature factory and I had no real influence over what was being built.

This one is still new and I’m learning a lot both on fishbowl and off about designing the career I want. What I need to establish and how I need to show up. But it really really helps that my questions are being met with answers, the manager makes time to give clarity and direction of what they need from me and feedback my progress so far. Even the ceo made time to give a presentation on the company vision and how the things we do now connect to each other.

So guess what I’m doing? I’m taking my time to learn. Asking lots of questions to better understand concepts and the reasons why some decisions are made or how things work in the industry.

I’ll keep doing that as many times as I need to make sure I’m building and shipping what is most relevant to the customers and the company.

And if this company turns out to be a ruse too and things don’t go well? I’ve tried, I’ll happily exit knowing that and try to find another which might be better.

TL;DR, before you write off your career or your efforts so far, be sure you’re in an environment that enables you and you’re also putting in the work necessary.
