Leave. Grass might not be greener, but it will pay better. Staying loyal is foolish if it's not rewarded.

You should always weight the pros and cons of ANY new role. I made bank at my last job but I was abused by managers. Treated like shit. Zero decent benefits.
I think firms appreciate talent and experience over loyalty. If by leaving the firm your colleague was able to step into a greater role and then bring new skills and perspective back, then he's worth the higher comp. On the flip side, how loyal would you firm be to you when faced with an opportunity/trade-off decision. ....I love the people I work with, I love the work I do, and I love where I work, but if I feel like I can grow and earn more faster by leaving and at some point maybe returning, I will.

Correct loyalty can SOMETIMES lead to getting screwed over. But you do run a risk of leaving and coming back of “will they hire me or do they think I’ll just jump ship again?”
Loyalty at work is cute, but won’t get you higher pay or a better role

Totally agree with you
I think at its core, it only has to do with expense control. HR doesn’t budge on giving internals competitive market rate. They know for every 1 person that leaves for fair wages another 10 will stay and die being underpaid.
Its appalling to me

I would explore if I know for a fact I’m being underpaid in comparison to new hires

Talent/experience over loyalty sadly. I will say my company is a company I shall remain loyal to BECAUSE the benefits are PRISTINE.
In my opinion, loyalty has not been valued for many years now. If you want both your career and salary to grow, the fastest way to do that is by job hunting. I change jobs every two to five years.
Loyalty doesn’t seem to be rewarded. Unfortunately I’ve seen this happen multiple times at my current and previous company. If you want a higher salary, it typically always pays off to look outside
