I’m tired of being the PDF Whisperer for a partner who makes 10x my salary. I spent 20 minutes today explaining that you can't search a scanned image of a document unless you OCR it first. If you can’t navigate a basic folder structure, should you really be running a multi-million dollar practice? How do you stop being office IT just because of your age?

Big picture - if this is your inroad to a relationship and rapport with this person, it’s a win for you.

I have had arguments with partners - the type who have secretaries print their emails - following bar association cybersecurity presentations where I was a panelist, telling me I was just fearmongering and shilling for anti-virus manufacturers. (I wonder which ones, since I scrupulously avoid mentioning only one when I have to mention any at all.) I tell them don't come crying to me when you get sanctioned for client data being exposed in a breach.

This is a joke right? It’s not necessarily age. Most office IT should be done by IT folks, WP folks, or secretaries. When those folks can successfully negotiate complex legal documents we can talk about such skills being fungible.

Perhaps you are doing the grunt work because you are the youngest? I agree about billing for it tho.

You are their employee, not their equal.

like

It’s not a matter of being equal or not… it’s a matter of someone who has a higher pay not having equivalent knowledge in the systems them use to that of a person with lesser pay. That is all.

As a third year experienced associate, I am up for promotion this year. I know for a fact that all the managers and directors whom I have worked with are very supportive of my promotion. I had perfect snapshots with performance differentiators. But my utilization and over time has been lower than the required metric. It was around ~82% and only ~150 hrs of over time. Should I still be hoping for the promotion or should I start looking out for better opportunities?

Junior associate here (2L). Got some ‘constructive feedback’ from a 4L. We went over budget on a matter, and 4L thinks it has something to do with my inefficient delegation to 0Ls (and not the all the out of scope work the client asked us to do but doesn’t want to pay for...). Delegated tasks included basic grunt work like splitting out documents, preparing execution versions and other low-level tasks. 4L asked me to check with them before I delegate anything in the future. Thoughts?

I’ve been doing ID for about 2 years now. Mostly slip and fall and WC work. Long-term, I want to move out of ID. I’m currently interviewing at a firm that does ID, but mostly does insurance coverage opinions. They also do some more complex ID, such as L&E.

With the ultimate goal of moving completely out of ID, would this be seen as a step up? I appreciate any and all feedback. TIA
