I’m trying to move from a 15-year career in Retail Banking into Corporate Finance, and recruiters treat me like I’m trying to learn to walk. They see Branch Manager and immediately write me off, ignoring the fact that I’ve managed $100M+ in assets and a team of 20. How do you break the stigma when you have the actual skills to do the corporate work?

I would engage the assistance of a professional resume writer to make sure those transferable skills slap them right across the face when they look at your resume. And you should work on framing your personal elevator pitch on how those skills and experiences translate to the role you’re after as well as how your nontraditional background might bring something new and different to the role. Make sure you explain the challenge you’ve been running into so they can package your work experience the best way to overcome that.

Have you tried roles you’re overqualified for in corporate finance just to get your foot in the door on the other side? I know quite a few people at the bank I work at do that. Getting to the corporate side seems to be the most difficult step

To be fair, they are very different things. Especially if you’re looking for a leadership role.

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Is it just me or is production seriously that dry (fulltime or otherwise) in NYC these days? Can’t seem to find my next FL gig, even with ample experience and great names in my book! What gives!

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?
