I explain why I cannot take on an extra responsibility, but I do appreciate it when somebody thought of me to take it on. At a certain point, you can take on so much that you will struggle, and the work will struggle. Best to scale back before that happens.

I understand that! It is nice to know someone thought of you for a certain task, but it can become too much if you’re not careful!
I remind myself that I matter too. If I wouldn't want to see a friend or loved one spreading themselves too thin, then why should I tolerate that for myself?

I think a good way of setting that boundary is to explain what tasks you have ongoing and how to reprioritize if that new responsibility is something they want you to focus on now

I agree with this, but some management just doesn’t call seem to care about prioritizing certain tasks. It’s more of a “oh well, get it all done” situation.
