I’m worried that I am stuck in Resume Hell. I’ve been in practice for fifteen years but 1.) never worked for a firm, 2.) worked 2/3 of my career as the sole lawyer at a tiny company (“GC” role but nobody seems to care), 3.) got laid off when my last company got merged (Senior role), and 4.) have been doing in-house secondments for over two years now. Last time I had to look for work, most companies auto-rejected me.

Any tips for making this look good enough to get an interview?

Look for AGC in-house counsel roles.

You should be adjusting your resume for every application so that your listed experience matches with a keyword in the posting. If you think the “GC” title is hurting you, just call it in-house counsel.

Your strength is being a businessperson who is also a lawyer. Emphasize that and you should see improvements.

Additional context: my current company just got rid of our group health insurance and the ACA plans we’ve been shoved onto don’t cover about half of our existing doctors. We also have no 401K match and no paid sick days. So I’m not chasing any big dreams here, just looking for in-house work with STANDARD corporate benefits.

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
