In my last role, my lab director was very hands-off, which gave me freedom but also left me feeling unsupported at times. In another role, I had much more structure and feedback, which helped me grow faster but often made me feel under pressure. It made me realize how much leadership style affects career development in research. What kind of lab manager/director has helped you thrive the most, and why?

I thrive under an extremely hands-off manager
I work best when left to my own devices
I like to just get my assignments and to be left alone

Same here.

I prefer to have a manager that is clear with expectations and gives me guidance where appropriate but can trust me to get things done myself. I don’t need regular feedback but I also don’t want a very hands off manager.

One of the worst double standards in corporate america.

Companies especially startups expect you to not keep interviewing when you accept a job offer. “It can deteroriate your brand.”

But companies would replace you in a heartbeat for almost any reason. Including interviewing a candidate who will replace you (you will be fired as soon as they find a person).

So companies can fuck with the little guys but we can’t look for our best interest?
