How can companies justify cutting research and development expenses when they literally have no future without it

I've learned that slashing budgets is always difficult - no matter which department :(

I find it hard to justify but as an R&D engineer, I think I'm a little biased!

When it comes to staying afloat, it's worrying about the current situation rather than the future that's most pressing. ...that doesn't make it any less frustrating though.

Received two offers - taking one (market paying first BigLaw job 🙌🏽🙌🏽) and now have to turn down the other. Obviously waiting to clear conflicts which will take awhile. Assuming I should just call and turn down the other offer, right? Not looking forward to the conversation as a few personal contacts at the firm went to bat for me to get it and had no less than 9 partners reach out to me once they sent it.

I am currently working as a paralegal in a small/mid sized firm where compensation as far as salary is limited. Recently I have decided to leave and have started doing initial interviews with very large firms. When the question of compensation always comes up of course I want to say the highest number possible. Is this a turn off? Should I try to be more realistic in the number that I give or shoot for the stars?
