I tend to overwork myself and it’s really taking a toll on my mental well-being. I want to learn a lot and prove myself to my superiors so that they recognize me/see value. Now my work has a sense of dread to it. I watched my parents be workaholics growing up, so it’s all I know. I’m also goal-oriented and driven, so achieving a lot scratches that itch for me. But, it’s making me want to quit cause I’m burned out and depressed….im not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I hate it when that happens, it is really annoying when they make us wait like that. The worst thing is to be with the uncertainty that if someone finds out and it is still not published, all our effort would be in vain.
All you can do is keep waiting and hope for the best. The review process can be slow, but hopefully your paper will eventually be published. In the meantime, you can try to find other journals that might be interested in publishing your work. It's always a risk putting your work out there, but you just have to hope that it will be worth it in the end.
Try to stay positive. It's possible that the journal is just very busy and they're taking their time in reviewing your paper. Remember that getting published in a top journal is a big accomplishment, so don't get discouraged.
If you've been waiting for a while and you still haven't heard anything from the journal, it might be a good idea to reach out to them and see what's taking so long. Maybe there's something you can do to speed up the process.
The best thing you can do in this situation is to keep yourself busy with other projects so you don't dwell on the review process too much. You can also reach out to other colleagues in your field and see if they've had any experiences with this journal (positive or negative).
If they have not given you an answer write them a very respectful but sincere email, making reference to the fact that you need their answer because you have other options to offer your publication.
Maybe you just have to be more patient and wait a little longer. As you say, it is the most important in your branch, perhaps there are others like you who are also waiting or even have been waiting longer than you. The world does not revolve around us.
