Without knowing how you do it now, I find a post-it critique to be really helpful both during the process of a piece and at the end of a piece as a way of helping reflection. Put the work out around the room on walls or on tables, and put a blank sheet of paper next to each piece with the artist’s name on the top. Give each kid a bunch of Post its. After discussing and/or modeling good feedback have them do a gallery walk where they leave feedback on a Post it that they stick to the paper. Using the post it means they don’t have to wait for someone else to finish writing on the paper. When they’re done each artist has a sheet with a lot of feedback on it, and no one has to feel singled out for their opinions b/c it can be anonymous. Additionally you can simply pull off and discard any…*unhelpful*…feedback if anyone doesn’t commit to the exercise with a helpful tone.
