Although that is a logical conclusion, oftentimes things are going on internally that you can't see. It could be budget changes, waiting for a requisition approval, evaluating an internal candidate, any number of things. Plus if it was during the holidays, things do slow down in recruiting a bit
Unfortunately, I was rejected with those automated emails responses.
Mainly it is, from internal experience - not returning = no clarification if the job is still going or not, more like something changed and vacancy closed at all. Because if you arent selected it usually one-two days after interview stage.

In my experience, delays do not always mean rejection. I follow up once, calmly, then assume silence is about process rather than me.
