How many of you have a set curriculum and how many of you get to choose the literature/create your own content? Which do you prefer?

We have a curriculum to follow but we can use other resources that we feel will work better for our students.

We have objectives from the state, an online textbook, and suggested readings from our county curriculum. We have the freedom meet objectives with novels, plays, or nonfiction. If a book is not on the approved list we need to run it by the librarian. We live a conservative part of the country and get challenged on approved old selctions sometimes. For example, I have been challenged on The Crucible because "it promotes witchcraft." I persuaded the parent that there was so much more.

"Tell me you haven't read the text you're protesting without telling me you haven't read the text you're protesting."

Or possibly "Tell me you haven't read ANYTHING..."

We used to have freedom to choose literature and develop assessment. Then, starting about 15 years ago, a series of incompetent and, in one case, pathological curriculum directors chipped away that freedom, and instruction has suffered tremendously.

Central Office may have finally figured their mistake(s). The new curriculum director is competent, sane, and open-minded. I have my fingers crossed.

I’m dying laughing at “pathological” because it hits so hard

We follow district curriculum, and there’s an approved reading list that we can choose from for whole-class instruction; however, we allow student choices for their independent reading.

like

We get to choose our literature. The state has a “suggested books” list, but we don’t have to use it. We do have to consider the community we live in when choosing, though.

like

We get a significant amount of flexibility within the curriculum that was chosen

like

We have a curriculum, but we also have a pacing guide that must be followed. It gives us the “when to teach what” but we can use resources of our own choosing if we wish. Curriculum is going for standardization, but the cage of the pacing guide does not best utilize the support we could get from the other CORE areas.

When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I have used web quests, but I have found that the kids researching their choice of topics and creating Slides containing information and pics results in more students participating. Recently they researched heraldry for the Medieval Era and reproduced either a family crest that they found or created their own personal crest. Anyone have other activities they use?
