In your opinion, do you think developers make good managers? I have a colleague who was just promoted and it seems like a very odd choice to me. I'm not saying he's not a good worker, but I just don't know if he has the soft skills to manage a team.

being a good manager and a developer are not mutually exclusive, many bad managers aren’t developers and many good managers were developers

Totally depends. someone coming from the technical side has the POTENTIAL to be a great manager because they understand the work better than a normal pointy headed boss and might have a good feel for how hands on or off to be with their staff. On the other hand, there is a lot of other crap to deal with that an engineer mind might find objectionable (politics, budget issues, interpersonal stuff). We also might not be the best at communicating in front of a large group from a leadership perspective. One of my worst manager's was a former developer, but in fairness, he was bad at that too before he became a manager. My current manager is a former dev and is great at a lot of things. He still does new tech demos in meetings, and doesn't micromanage, plus he gets what it is like for us in the trenches so his expectations aren't as unrealistic as those above him, and he can act as a buffer.

Almost no one starts out as a good manager. There are skills associated with the role that you have to learn. Unless your coworker has prepared for the role, I doubt they would be a good manager today. But they certainly could be one eventually.

I would like to transfer my career to Healthcare Data Analytics. I’m gaining my data analytics certification by the ending of November. I’ve also worked and still currently working for great healthcare company’s. I also have lots of great healthcare data experience. My only concern is no degree. What can I say to recruiters that will WOW them or replace the fact I have no degree because that’s what most of these company’s require.

Hi y'all! How flexible is your remote workplace is when it comes to where you live and how frequently you move? Do they expect you to stay in your city/province/state, or do they allow you to go full digital nomad? Do you wish your employer's policy would change?
