I don’t respond or read anything after work hours. I only turn on chat notifications on my phone if I’m stepping away from my work laptop AND it’s within work hours.
You’re going to laugh at my solution, but I’ve been WFH for almost a decade. It’s really hard in tech, because you have to train your brain to shutdown.
I have this crazy IoT setup with Alexa, IFTTT and Philips Hue. It changes colors of the lightbulbs in my house so that I know when working hours are. I chose orange for working hours and blue for nighttime hours. It’s all automated, so when it turns blue, I write down the code line number I was working on and walk away from my office.
In the beginning I’d think about solutions for work when I was falling asleep, so this has really helped with that.
I also use iPhone focus settings to not alert me about work things after 6pm. The one exception is I’ll let my boss contact me if it’s an emergency, but I’ll tell them early on that I have kids and they get my time after work while my boss gets my time during work.
It’s hard to set boundaries, but once you do, it’s a much better balance and healthier life.
I don’t do dishes or laundry during work hours. That’s how rigid I am about this. WFH takes an incredible amount of self discipline, but once you achieve the balance, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Block ur time off on your Google calendar (if it’s a shared calendar)
Definitely set up boundaries. There's too much of a blurred line now that people are working from home. You need to take ownership of this.
