Former IPG and current WPP employee here: Stay connected with your teams. Continue to stay billable. Network across accounts. Be in the know of what work exists and what is coming. Be visible (e.g. Raise your hand on leadership calls, etc). Put yourself in positions of growth (e.g. agency trainings, etc). Keep your resume updated, **broaden your background**, etc. And just general human stuff: Be reliable. Don’t be a pushover, but be likable.
In other words: Show you are an asset across accounts beyond today. Understand AI and how it can complement your work and productivity.
As account folks, we all know these things but not everyone practices it. It’s easy get comfortable in safe accounts and with familiar teams.
At WPP: Sometimes it felt like the decisions were random and didn’t make sense. Some were more obvious. One trend I noticed is those who had a specific niche were more likely to be let go. The obvious is if your billability is crap, you’re on someone’s radar. Not sure of IPG’s markers, but I was specifically told the magic number was 72%. Anyone below that, leadership was keeping a close eye.
This is solid advice and better guidance than I've gotten from any of my own leaders.
Bracing for impact & awaiting more layoffs
I'm VERY worried about the layoff situation and nothing has really been said to calm any nerves.
