Hi Fishes,
I am a Senior mechanical eng. YoE 6. I completed a pg diploma in embedded design and automation system for domain change. But due to my lack of experience in new domain I am not getting opportunities. Could you please suggest me how to grab the opportunities in the new domain and how much CTC I can expect in new domain

Its the equivalent of someone saying, whats the hype around McKinsey.. wont you make as much as big 4. At all levels you will earn more at a MF and the gaps become very large at MD/Partner

All the folks here are right about the carry being substantially different, but that’s assuming you stay in PE past associate, which is in of itself very difficult and will require substantial sacrifices

Yeah just do whatever makes you happy but can give you that level of material satisfaction you want in life. I feel at a certain age and income level other things just become more important in life besides just purely chasing the bag.
I play a few video games and met a kid who had an MD at a major bank, he grew up very affluent but it was so telling when he told me the father literally worked every single family vacation. I don’t think I’d like to leave that impression on my children if I had any
Itll matter (exp) more the higher you climb the PE ladder. Pretty life changing yeah. Same goes for your health
It’s not that clear cut. At managing partner level, yes you’ll likely make materially more at a MF. For everyone else, it really depends on your personally carry stake + co invest + fund returns. A VP at a $500M fund with 2% carry returning 2.5x+ will make more than a VP at a $10B fund with 0.25% at 1.5x MOIC
This is a good point , especially since ppl tend to say that getting the higher returns is harder at bigger funds
If you are an MD with 25% of the carry pool on a fund and the size is $500mm versus $5bn, math is easy to figure out

No MD has 25% of carry pool
Massively material difference when you start earning carry
