Is ‘career growth’ just a buzzword in job offers? Every offer promises growth, exposure, and opportunity — but once you’re inside, the role can look very different. When evaluating an offer, how do you tell real growth potential from empty buzzwords? What do you actually look for?

I think it depends on the company. I always read reviews and really do my research to see if they actually offer career growth. People will usually put in their reviews if a company has no growth.

Yes this is a good idea and I am reading the Glassdoor reviews now

That's something that's probably impossible to know without being inside the organization. Probably the best you can do is rely on your instincts, and perhaps on some networking. If you can talk to people with some insight into the organization that could be meaningful.

Look at the team to see if people are regularly promoted, esp from the role you are interviewing for. LinkedIn is great for that kind of research.

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

Next week I’m having my first lateral interview as a junior associate. I’m very nervous because the group with whom I’m interviewing works with life science/tech clients and the attorneys have strong science/tech backgrounds; and I do not. However, I am very, very interested in transitioning to this practice. And I reaaally want this job because it’s at my dream firm. How would you recommend preparing for the lateral interview?

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. Now that I have, are there any sites besides “jobscan” that I can use to make sure my resume fits the job descriptions? Does anybody know any recruiters that could help me, as well?
