I have done it once and it's possible. The challenge nowadays is finding an employer willing to sponsor a tier 2. Once you do, the process itself is smooth, but very costly. If you have any dependants, and if the employer is not willing to sponsor them, then the switch will cost you a substantial amount. Roughly 1k per dependant per year. And this is about to go up soon. I would recommend coming here on a tier 2, and if possible , switch to the tier 1 global talent ASAP. That will give you the freedom to move employers or start something of your own.
It’s definitely tough but possible. I found that more companies are open to at least discussing sponsorship post-Brexit. They still need labour. Also helps if you have a referral to back you up.
There is no Tier 2 type visa anymore, it got replaced by a skilled worker visa. It is essentially the same as Tier 2 and linked to an employer. It is possible to change jobs, as long as you find a new employer who is willing to sponsor you.
I moved to the UK on a tier 2 and switched jobs and companies. Once you’re in it’s easy - the company only needs to take over sponsorship which is easier than a full sponsor. It was just admin.
