Asking for it now is in most cases career sabotage at your present firm. I would start to seriously consider moving to a firm where you can find more work-life balance, because you’re only going to end up back in the same situation when you return from sabbatical (which they may not even grant you).
Just want to say I’m also at year 5 and also think about walking away almost every day. I don’t have any useful insight to offer, just know you’re not alone in feeling that way.
What about using two or three weeks of vacation time instead of asking for a sabbatical? Then you can reevaluate your options with a clearer head.
Find a new job and/or practice area. If you are at this point after only 5 years of practice you just won’t be able to handle this long term. That’s the harsh reality. With seniority, especially if you get to partner level, your stresses generally will increase as you will be responsible for things other than actual law practice.
I recommend therapy. You’re not going to cure burnout by taking leave without addressing your lack of boundaries with work.
Who has time for therapy?!! 🥹🥹🤣🤣🤣
Many firms don’t offer them at all, and even when they do, asking early could raise questions about your commitment or impact your future projects or promotions. There’s also the reality of returning to a fast‑moving environment after time off. It can be stressful to catch up.
I was in your situation but at year 7 after a promotion to senior counsel. I left to go in-house. With 5 years in, you’re eligible for most in-house roles, or consider govt. I recovered from my severe burn out with the huge increase in WLB
How long is the standard sabbatical offered at year 7? You could ask for a shortened version and offer to deduct any time you take now from the one you get in 2 years. Then use part of the sabbatical to look at new jobs.

What’s causing the burnout?
At least wait another 2 years, take sabbatical, and then walk away.
