Do you like the firm that wants a full day? If so, no. Do the full day. Is the other a second best? If so, I’d stay another day and tell your current firm you were waylaid—you know, travel issues and all.
What if you don’t get an offer from your preferred firm? Refusing a full day interview is a good way to make sure you don’t get an offer at your second place firm.
If they want a full day, can you ask the firm to cover hotel arrangements? If you’re flying that shouldn’t be a problem. I agree you probably don’t want to ask for 1/2 day - even if you want an offer from the other firm, you can’t count on it until you have it. Also, you never know how you’re going to feel about a firm until you get in there for callbacks. I hated my top choice after I spent 4 hours there.
I will add that I’ve spent a lot of time on a recruiting committee. We knew most candidates were fitting in two firms in one day (we usually even know which firm), but some candidates did some pretty blatant things that made it very clear we were a second choice. It never went in their favor.
Thanks for your perspective!! Based on the feedback here I think I’ll keep the full day.
