I feel you. It seems to be a closed field. I cannot get any with referrals. Most positions are posted after they know the prospective employee.
I’ve recently received interviews for those kind of roles at regeneron, novartis, jnj through applying via hr system
Is there a way to move to consulting from generic Pharma?
Yes. Standard route would be to get an MBA, and go through the recruitment process. Less common to come directly, but usually there is some recruitment of experienced hires.
Some positions from my experience are for compliance reasons since they still have to go through the recruitment process regardless of whether they know who to hire already.

Will the big pharma companies sponsor visa?

It's very possible. Generalist consulting background isnt the golden ticket it used to be though. A lot more skepticism of consulting skill sets if there isnt a lot of industry specific experience. If you have done regulatory or commercial projects or work with the FDA etc it makes it easier.
I work in Regulatory and it’s been a dozen years since we hired a single former consultant who watched laid off. . For the Therapeutic areas, they like PharmDs and PhDs. They just RIF’d 60% of Reg Ops 2 weeks ago as their jobs (US and UK) are being replaced by Amgen India staff. The best success has been to get a recruiter via LinkedIn and have them help you.
With all the massive layoffs lately, it’s a tough field to get into and tougher to remain,
