They are surely not a “dying firm”. Definitely not any more dying than other players in the industry.
If anything, given the caliber of the employees there, and their relationships with C-Suite, they are a firm I’d bet will do better than other players in consulting industry.
Ok here is my view having been through and got an offer about 3 years ago in January/feb time which then got rescinded as the firm went into it famous spiral downwards. Many of the people I went through the interview process with were exceptional but half of them are elsewhere now having been pushed out. In addition many of the non McKinsey hires I know only lasted 2 years but I’d say 30% are still there - of those that left about half were voluntary due to the intensity but most exited to some pretty sweet roles. If I had gone there even for 2 years I reckon I’d be in a better place career wise as when all is said and one having it on your resume is still a big ticket item. Remember the way McK get rid of people is much better than other firms - they put people places where they can become future clients, it’s really is an excellent approach.
Encourage you to steer clear
Coming from a KPMG guy this is rich
McKinsey isn’t going anywhere. Their op model and services may change but they will continue to be relevant for the next generation
It’s a great opportunity for networking and professional growth. There are a lot of things that McK does right. I’ve met some of the most amazing people there.
As with anywhere, there are pros and cons. The kind of work you can be a part of can be incredibly rewarding. It can be pretty stressful at times, but you’ll also learn a lot. I wouldn’t go into it with a negative mindset, because it’s a huge place. Everyone’s experience is going to be quite different, because teams and norms and the projects are so diverse.
Is there a certain industry you’re looking to get into?
McKinsey isn’t dying by any means but they also haven’t invested strongly in the expertise needed to continue growing in the coming era. They lost a LOT of good leadership and talent post-COVID with poor management and culture had really eroded when I left earlier this year. I’ve heard it’s picked back up with work since, but they have a big gap in the middle of the funnel now.
They have changed their model. They have leaned in heavily to take a piece of the revenue on the longer term projects they are on. Better for them since they basically get a cut of sales, production, etc revenue as they help the company perform and deliver not just the engagement fees
