Speaking purely on my own experience, the actual content of the GMAT doesn't really require any refresher if you work in consulting. It's pretty basic stuff.
What got me initially was:
1) Timing - you need to be fast
2) Getting used to the way the questions are - hard to put in words what I mean, but the solution is just grinding questions
3) English - I'm comfortable in English but it isn't my first language, so it was easy to get distracted
I really only studied with the mock tests and got a 100th percentile score
I took mine 5 years from college and probably 7 or more from my last math class. TTP will teach you everything you need to know. Got a 95th percentile score after starting from a baseline of basically zero. Starting at M7 in the fall with $$$$
It was tough. No vacation that summer. Studying at least 3-4 hours after work and tried to hit 8 hours Saturday and Sunday. Paid off though.
