I’ve been unemployed for three months after a layoff and I’m starting to spiral. Recruiters keep asking what I’ve been up to, and I panic trying to make job hunting sound productive. I’m networking, applying, even volunteering, but it feels like a scarlet letter. How do you talk about unemployment in interviews without sounding desperate?

Be honest but confident. Focus on what you’ve done to stay sharp, not the gap itself. Most firms care more about attitude than a few months off.

It's always going to feel like a scarlet letter. I had a real tough time with unemployment. I would throw in that you are taking cle to stay up to date with your field. If the recruiter can't understand the strain someone goes through with being unemployed in this day and age and is giving you a hard time. Screw them they weren't going to help you anyway.

Yup or just create your own firm and don’t do any work, you tried the solo life and didn’t like it

Like the other comment said, just be confident when explaining yourself and when you get an interview thank them right off the bat for taking the time to interview you. I immediately said I am very grateful to be here today at the place that hired me and I think that helped. I went 6 months and eventually took a job at a restaurant in the mean time, I needed money. All the interviews I did, many interviewers actually commented on the job market being insane right now. They are aware as well.

Im in the same position and get at least 5scam calls from foreigners daily

If you’re not going to open your own practice, I would be investing in my skills and continue with community/volunteer bar association involvement. As well as networking 1-2-1s.

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

I’m struggling a bit. If I knew how to market well, I certainly wouldn’t be in this position.

Second year associate here who recently switched from litigation to corporate law. I am absolutely swamped while simultaneously having no idea what I’m doing ever and I’m feeling so burnt out. The partners are pretty great and feedback is constructive which I’m grateful for, but I’m so desperate for a compliment I’ve been saving any scrap of positivity in a folder 😭 it’s December 22 and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping because I don’t feel capable of thinking about it. I need a hug.

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

I don’t want my volunteer job at entity A potentially jeopardizes my full-time job at entity B.

If you use the pomodoro method for time focus and tracking, do you bill in those increments or just keep your billablr timer going the whole time? For example, I work in 25 minute increments for large projects then I get a break.
