I'm so sorry. Losing your job is always awful; having your boss do it over a freaking DM is an entirely new kind of enraging. And unfortunately, there's nothing you can really do about it. Thanks to at-will employment laws, it's very much legal 😕

If you are in the US and employed at will, they can usually terminate employment without notice, even during a trial period. It does not make it feel any less abrupt or frustrating though. The only issue would be if it was discriminatory or violated a contract. Otherwise, legally it is typically allowed, even if handled poorly.

That’s rough, especially getting it over a DM. If you were still in a probation or trial period, many places can end employment without notice, but it should still follow local labor rules and be handled professionally. Might be worth checking your contract or local employment standards just to be sure. How are you holding up about it?

Over DM is scummy. Usually you can have up to a 6 months probationary period so sadly they can do this but they still have to have good reason. Atleast in the UK.
I can't believe they did it over a DM instead of in person. That is honestly a huge red flag. However, if you live in an at-will state, they can fire you at any time without even having a reason. I am sorry this happened to you, though—that is so crappy.

They can fire you at any time, for any reason and without notice. It’s legal. But at Will employment also entitles you to quit a job for any reason at any time and without notice. So, in the future, remember that giving notice when you resign is a professional courtesy and is not required.
