It is kind of ironic. They need people to work so much that when they can’t, they are putting them on a path to being let go? Doesn’t seem to help morale, which is probably struggling. Do you know why they are short-staffed?
Is the job you are at hiring if so can you provide information?
That isn't fair at all. I have seen companies do this, but it usually makes people pretty upset. Nobody likes being forced to work overtime.
It seems as if they should go a different route to keep people working OT besides hiring 3-5 more people. If they reward those working the extra OT that might encourage others to wanna work more OT. Punishing those for not being able to work OT or a minimum amount of OT. If you got extra 1/2 day or full day of PTO day off or a little extra $20-50 for a certain about of OT in a pay period.
To punish those unable to work tons of OT could be a labor law violation that could be verifiable with a labor atty or DOL office.

I've been in the dsp field for over 25yrs and in that field they are always short handed my last job I was stuck there for 12 1/2 days bcuz this happened when my supervisor went on vacation and I was the assistant manager and the staff that was supposed to relieve me quite on me and then I called the other staff and she told me to go f*** myself that she quite i called the list of other and mind you only women can work in that house and none of the females can come and help me bcuz they were dealing with there own homes or they wouldn't work the resident bcuz she was a handful so I was there for all those days until finally some one I knew from years ago was working at the same company and she came and helped me so I know what you feel like
