I am a clinical research coordinator working in Austin, Texas. I have my Masters in Cell & Molecular Biology and have a year of laboratory research experience.

I’ve been in my position for 5 months now. I make $27 hourly which amounts to about $51,000 yearly. Am I being under paid? Are all coordinator positions hourly? As a laboratory researcher I was salary :(

How do I go about asking for a raise or should I explore other companies or medical schools that have clinical research?

You are definitely being underpaid for someone that has a masters degree. I’m a system operations coordinator in Cali and get paid almost the same rate as you. Keep in mind only have a BS in Business.

I also have a Masters in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. From all the research I've done I understand that CRC salaries range from average to high. It depends on factors including but not limited to education, years of experience, the company and their budget, how well you sell yourself during the interview, and negotiation. I will also say that I always count my time in school as professional experience. I was being trained even though I wasn't being paid and it's that same knowledge helping me in the job, right? So I always count my education and school projects as professional experience too. I'm a protocol coordinator/ study coordinator and I'm earning a little over 110k gross (before taxes, darn taxes!) I have over 3 years of "work experience" but 5 years overall including my education. I asked for N90k initially and when the offer came, I renegotiated based on market research and my experience, what I was bringing to the table. I live in Maryland.

Yes I do have it on my resume. For example,I listed my internship during my masters as Graduate research intern and listed my duties. My lab research was on cancer biomarkers and their role in metastasis. So my duties were along the lines of:
- resolved the correlation between cd133 and matrix metalloproteinases in cancer metastasis and invasion
- conducted laboratory procedures such as immunoassay, etc. according to Good Laboratory Practice to support the Principal Investigator's hypotheses
-conducted protocol reviews to identify flaws in research and optimized research results by X%
- conducted regular literature reviews to identify data-starved sectors for potential research
- prepares award winning scientific posters for the communication of our research findings to the scientific faculty and the lay community
- maintained communication between partner laboratories, vendors, and sponsors, etc
- organized team meetings to establish project goals and ensure deliverables could be met within set timeliness
- mentored and trained junior interns and students in laboratory procedures according to GLP, etc

I also have a heading titled scientific posters and papers where I listed all the research I was involved in or assisted. I also listed my thesis paper there as well.

Not all are positions are salaried, some are hourly. The pros and cons are that salaried gets paid the same whether there is a high or workload and if they hace to work more, so they are exempt from over time. With hourly, you can earn more if you work more hours but you also may earn less if you work less. I love companies like Medical Science and Computing, and Emmes for clinical research opportunities. Don't forget to add your education to your overall years of experience. I'm happy to help refer you to MSC. There are definitely alot of growth in clinical research and good money to earn.

On selling yourself during interviews, you have to be confident. You have to know you are worthy of every position you applied to and be confident that your skills will be very useful to the team
It's something you learn mostly by doing interviews - you learn from each one and consider how you could have done better. You can also do research on how to sell yourself better doing interviews. Know that you have alot to offer.
Highlight the best part of your experience: awards, achievements in school and previous roles, certifications you may have, etc.

You can also utilize this time to take clinical research courses and training to list on your resume. Check CITI training for some, NIH also has an intro to clinical research training online which is free. You can also obtain your CCRP certification to stand out. I'm currently pursuing that now. If your current job offers reimbursement for training and seminars, make use of that.

Hello. IMO you aren’t being under paid. In clinical research they want experience over masters degrees unless you are a scientist, project manager, CTM, management etc.

Currently I'm getting approx 9Lpa, and it feels like I'm pretty much stuck here. Switching jobs increases the pay scale, while staying for a while reflects stability.

When I look at the other member's comments here, it seems majority of folks are earning 20-30Lpa or even more.

Any suggestions from mature audience to achieve a big pay raise.

So I say this with complete humility and an understanding that this is a fortunate-ish situation to be in. I’m in a position where I am tied to nothing, I have no children, spouse, or house. My job, which I’ve loved until some recent significant leadership changes, is sucking the life out of me and I think it may be time for a change. Because I am able to “pick up and go” I’m open to opportunities and locations. I’ve never worked with a recruiter but was hoping I could get some recommendations!
