I’ve noticed a lot of open scientist roles with good salaries (sub to mid 100k) in pharma are exclusively looking for Bachelor’s and Master’s holders. What’s up with that?

Seems ironic that you can get a PhD just to be unemployed long term while someone with a less advanced degree can skip ahead, get interviews for a position you would love to apply to, and out earn you.

I have mad respect for people that sacrificed time for earning a phd

I work around a lot of PhDs and MDs and not to stereotype, but the people skills often aren’t there. Their ability to communicate complex topics to lay folks is often lacking. For those that have both, they end up running the departments.

Is the PhD required for that job? This is the question everyone need to answer before just randomly complaining on why lower the standards. I used to ask the same as question, but later realized that it's not the education that drives a competent employee. Enough skills to be trained at work and deliver is what most organizations are looking for.

You didn’t comprehend the statement and ended up answering a question that wasn’t asked. It’s not about a PhD being required. It’s that a PhD is a disqualifying factor in favor of a bachelor’s and master’s for a role as a scientist. I’m talking about positions that exclusively look for non PhDs to the exclusion of PhDs for a role a PhD specifically got an advanced degree for. Reading comprehension. This is the concept everyone (you) need to understand before randomly (and falsely) complaining.

This is normal. If you just want to get into big pharma, then bs/ms is much easier. If you want a better role/ceiling, then phd, but also way less jobs. Smarter way is to get in with bs/ms and do a part time/industry phd if you really really really like bench.

There are a ton of mid level managers with bs/ms degree in pharma (from sr scientists to AD/D), if you have a phd, how do you feel reporting to someone who has a bs degree? And not every bs/ms manager would like to mentor a phd/post doc.

This is the reason I’ve heard too but it’s really about ego and egos are individual things. Entire groups shouldn’t be punished because of the possibility of a few bad apples with egos not liking the fact that their superior has a less advanced degree. I’m pretty sure there are many PhDs that would have no problem reporting to someone with a bachelors degree that has more experience in the specific role. I believe no job as a scientist should be PhD exclusive since that in itself is an oxymoron. It’s one of the most backwards, contradictory, moronic concepts I can think of. If anything, all scientist roles should be open to PhDs at any level with restrictions for less advanced degrees at specific levels.

Should I accept the new offer ? How do I tell the previous company about this? Also, I’ve already negotiated with the first company and the $115K base is the negotiated salary. I really do not prefer one company over the other. They’re both great! I’m very confused here. TIA🙏
