I’ve noticed an increase in job listings calling out emotional maturity and resilience as a key skill, especially in roles described as fast-paced or high-pressure. It got me thinking about how companies define resilience, and how much emphasis is placed on building environments that support it?.

It’s funny you mention this because just yesterday I came across several jobs listing emotional intelligence as a key skill, and I was a little surprised to see that. When I think of resilience, I usually think of someone who can bounce back easily when things don’t go as planned. But most corporate environments don’t really support that kind of resilience.

like

you make a great point: resilience is often about bouncing back, but it’s a two-way street. Companies that ask for it should also foster environments where people can recover and grow , otherwise, it’s just expectation without support.

How are you seeing companies genuinely build environments that nurture resilience, not just list it as a requirement?

Maybe I’m misreading the situation, but that being in the job post tells me they don’t know how to interview people, OR they just have a really toxic place with high turnover. Either is very much possible. I defer to reviews when I see something concerning.

Thanks for sharing, and that is an excellent question! When looking through reviews, I try to separate the unique situations from broader issues. For example, somebody leaves a negative review that their manager is terrible. If it’s a large company, I’ll probably never cross paths with their manager, assuming they even still work there. But if a review is workplace has a silo mentality and it makes it hard to work, that’s an issue that will probably impact me.

That literaally tells you they're going to give you a hard time and they expect you to not retaliate.

Haha yeah, that one hits hard 😅. It basically reads like “we’re going to stress you out and your job is to take it with a smile.”
I’ve seen it pop up more and more lately and it always makes me pause. Out of curiosity , what’s the most honest or useful answer you’ve ever heard when someone actually asked about that line in an interview?

I believe that the company is definitely putting out that the environment is not supportive. Sure, there are times where every person has had to be resilient in some way as not everything goes according to plan all the time. It's just a part of being able to problem solve and or troubleshoot an issue.

The emotional maturity mention is key here. It suggests communication and or behavioral issues exist in my opinion. I don't see a company that values a servant leadership mentality would come close to using descriptions like this in their posting.

I try to give the benefit of the doubt and see for myself. If at an interview, I see the red flags come out as the hiring manager, interviewer display qualities or project an environment that doesn't align with my values, I think long and hard about it. I have tolerated environments that I shouldn't have for the necessity to be able to work until I try to find something better. I think unfortunately that is what the majority of people do because they need to work. There was one interview that was such a red flag that I politely rescinded consideration as I saw the owner was going to be verbally and mentally abusive toward staff.

Junior associate here (2L). Got some ‘constructive feedback’ from a 4L. We went over budget on a matter, and 4L thinks it has something to do with my inefficient delegation to 0Ls (and not the all the out of scope work the client asked us to do but doesn’t want to pay for...). Delegated tasks included basic grunt work like splitting out documents, preparing execution versions and other low-level tasks. 4L asked me to check with them before I delegate anything in the future. Thoughts?

Hi everyone,
So I had my NIPT and NT scans last week and I’ve been getting pieces of the results back from my doctor in the patient portal. All seems okay but I’m a bit confused. Does anyone know if FirstScreen is the same thing as NIPT? I was under the impression that NIPT was in 90th percent of certainty for Down syndrome but the result we got, labeled FirstScreen indicate 83% certainty so I’m confused if there are more results coming? I messaged the doctor but haven’t heard back yet.
