I've worked as a Test Technician for several years. I will be fulfilling an Industrial Mechanic role at a metal stamping plant later this week. How important/necessary would it be to pursue an Engineering degree? Is it too late, not worth the time/money, or is the degree truly valuable? Seems to be the only way to get "respect" in an engineering field outside of becoming a tough-skinned service engineer. Thoughts?

If it's feasible for you to get a degree you should pursue it. There are obstacles, of course, primarily time and money. If you have the degree you'll have many more opportunities available to you. The degree won't guarantee you success, but it will very likely increase the odds of you obtaining better employment down the road.

What do you want to do in the future? I’d ask myself that and see how much the degree is or isn’t necessary to that goal. I wouldn’t get it just to get it, but it might be the entry fee to whatever you want to do later on.

This is mostly for me but in case anyone else needs it: if everyone else praises your work, don’t let the senior associate with the bad haircut get you down.

Something has been bothering me for a long time and I want to get it off my chest.

My firm does upward feedback and I asked about 10 of my team to participate so that I could be a better supervisor for them. My results: I got mostly great feedback with constructive points, however along with it I received the meanest, most cold hearted criticism I’ve ever seen (con’t in comments).

Increasing CTCs in india is the single greatest hindrance from becoming a 5trillion economy. Opportunity cost to leave the job and start something of your own is widening. Further are these salaries even sustainable. Revenue of companies hasn't kept pace with compensation increase in india and it's a bubble which is soon going to burst. I'd think twice before accepting the offer in excess of 50% hike

Why is there such a huge pay difference between IT and Mechanical/auto industries? Many people in IT are getting 3xx salary hikes, but here I am struggling to get more that 20-30% hikes. Sure the skills are much more demand in IT field, but the discrepancy is too much. Is it due to most of the work are outsourced to consultancy/service based companies by the OEM? Or is there simply too much candidates available?
