Just received an offer, but not sure what to do as a woman in a male-dominated field. I posted my salary range early in the process, and their offer came in at the bottom. I want to counter but a friend in the same situation warned me that companies sometimes withdraw offers if women negotiate "too hard." Would you still counter? I really need this job but I also can't keep accepting lowball offers.

I had an offer earlier this year come in at the bottom of the posted salary band. I said to them "I appreciate this offer, and I would love to join the team but I'm actually surprised that I came in at the bottom of the salary band. Given my experience and the scope of the responsibility, including the results I've historically achieved and expect to carry forward to you organization, I expected that to be higher. Can you share with me the rationale around that or provide some context that may help us to fill in the gaps that may have been miscommunicated to raise that? They came back with $15K more without a heartbeat. ALWAYS negotiate. Especially in a male-dominated field.

If you don't ask the answer will always ne no. If your counter offer is not agreed to then you must decide if that is an employer you truly want to work with. Also, if declined is it a place that you are will to grow with because in time your may reach the desired wage. I had thst experience with and org and prior to my depart my salary increased from $19 to $52+ and hour.

Take “woman” out of your friends warning and the sentence holds the same meaning. You don’t have to be aggressive when negotiating, but still negotiate.

helpful

You should definitely negotiate. I was always taught that anything than can be negotiated should be, just so you don't come off looking like a pushover. The key is to be realistic. Offers will be rescinded, not because of someone's gender, but because the person will ask for something that comes off as unserious. If you make an unrealistic counteroffer that may be interpreted as not being in good faith, and that can disadvantage you.

If you don't negotiate then that is a bad way to start working with all these men.

Alawys. Always. Negotiate.

I would always counter. I think writing out a clear reason why and justification is really important so you feel confident in what you are asking for. that for me makes a huge difference in understanding why I am asking for it and emphasizing my value to the team

Of course counter! Hope it worked out

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!

Should I Go Back and Reneg? Recently I was offered a role as a Project Implementation Manager (In Retirement Services) .The salary range for Colorado residents was 65-89K. I’m located in NY so the recruiter said he would try to get me more. Ultimately he came back at 90K which is a bit inline with that I was seeing on Glassdoor but approx looks like I may leave 10-12K on the table. I accepted already but may get an offer from another HR company in account management around 90-100K. Need advice

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.
