Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I have seen a 100k range, which is fantastically stupid for a company to have that range. Yes, they may be fulfilling the requirements of CA and NY laws and throwing a higher number, but likely they won’t hire anyone from that area. And there are better ways to identify that.
The other reason is lazy SEO:Recruiting. For job seekers with search alerts for jobs over x amount, these jobs will get seen by more people.
I usually see a $50k-$80k range, which isn’t that much better.
If there is a large range like this, it’s a red flag. Upper management can have that big of range, but not middle management or lower.
Yeah completely. At my company we have ranges like 100-300k and that just means the min base is 100k and the max total comp is 300k. If you know anybody inside you would know that target comp is 80-90% of 300k so 240-270k is the base plus bonus target.
Yes, I am starting to see this trending.
They are just trying to catch your eye and pull in talent that otherwise would not have applied for the job, hoping your desperate enough to take the real range they budgeted for. I agree, it should be a red flag.

No, I always ask them to narrow it down and provide a realistic number of what they’re offering. I ask something like, “I noticed the posted range is very wide. Can you please advise what level of talent you’re looking for to fill this role? Entry level? Mid career level? Senior level?”
Quite honestly, even if they’re looking for an entry level person, $50k-$150k is still too wide a range. They should really narrow that down and provide some realistic and reasonable data.
If it’s a remote job that pays based on location a $100k range is normal. The low end of the range in a low COL area vs high end of range in a HCOL area could differ by at least 100k.
