Last year my VP assigned me and someone on my team additional roles that didn't align with our development plan or roles we were interested so the department could save money. They didn't want to pay for anyone external to support the project and didn't bother to find someone internal. Me and my team are burned out by the request and I have been looking for other roles. I get the sense that my direct report is also considering leaving. Would you try to retain talent? If so, how?

Nope I told my direct report to move along when we couldn’t get the salary he wanted. I told him you’re a good employee and you’re absolutely worth $X but unfortunately I cannot get you that raise here, go where your can get it. He left shortly after and got the number he needed and I’m happy for him.

I’m not trying to help corporate America I’m here to help the humans they employ. Yes it sucks I lost a great employee and I have some added work now, but I’m trying to help other people in their careers and I have no problem voicing my concerns to my boss. We have less headcount, more work and I can only do so many things until they hire new people.

Nope because I kept advocating for his raise on multiple occasions and said “there is a chance we lose him if we don’t get him a raise”. Management knew it was a possibility so wasn’t surprised when it happened.

My employee also was kind enough to give me tremendous praise on the way out so I was lucky that he backed me up and showed it was all about compensation.

I agree I would not ask an associate to stay in an unhealthy work environment. Especially if I was making plans to leave and actively seeking new opportunities.

Graduated in April with my PharmD/MBA degrees. I did two great biopharma internships, had my resume professionally edited, perfected my interview skills and started applying to jobs in January. I have talked to 20 plus recruiters maybe 3 have actually gotten me interviews the rest ghost me.
