I was an enlisted nuclear trained submariner. That opened tons of career opportunities, combined with an MBA paid for by GI Bill, I ended up in a career I really enjoy and earn much more than I ever thought I would
Got into a top university program I otherwise wouldn’t have been accepted into had it not been for my service 😆
Pro
Taught me that my goals are only achieved through hard work and discipline, and nothing more. Also, going overseas taught me the importance of humility and gave me perspective.
Pro
Definitely!
As the others have said, my service enabled me to get a degree, which took me from blue collar working class to white collar middle class. I had to give up a little of my youthful, able body, but overall it was a worthwhile trade for the social mobility
Def true. Came from a blue collar working family and now a white collar worker. Military truly is one of the gateways to the middle class.
Pro
Taught discipline. Apply that everyday.
Being in the service taught me about discipline and leadership. It made me realize the importance of respect and and selflessness. I missed being in the service.
Do you still miss it?
Taught me discipline. Also, every time I get nervous about something nowadays (client pitch, meeting with a partner, an interview) I think about how VERY nervous I got when I first had to jump out of planes and it doesn’t seem so bad anymore. Lots of opportunities and mentoring from companies targeting veterans/ the veteran network that I never would have ever known about since I came from an immigrant family. And of course, my husband.
